Steps to a Degree
At London Hotel School we have a three year programme which will take you to a BA Honours Degree.
The first and second years will lead to the award of a Higher National Diploma in Hospitality Management (BTEC Edexcel) The third to the BA degree.
During the first year students study six different subject areas and they are required to complete coursework assignments that are a combination of theory and research.
Our courses are designed to develop the students’ interpersonal skills, as well as their understanding of the theory of hotel management. Students often have to interview hotel managers and make presentations as part of their assignments; This helps them develop the communication and “people” skills that essential for anyone wanting a successful career in hotel management.
Students on this course need to be well organised and work to coursework submission deadlines and they must have a wireless enabled laptop computer. LHS has an internet based system (LHS Online) enabling students to work online in the production and submission of their coursework.
The HND consists of the following 6 subject modules: (Students may start at the beginning of any)
- Hospitality Today,
- Service Excellence,
- Rooms Division management,
- Food and Beverage and Events,
- Sales and Marketing Management
- Managing People.
The second year is a full-time, paid work placement in a selected hotel which offers students the opportunity to start their careers working for a famous chain hotel such as Hilton or Marriott, or at a world class hotel such as The Ritz, Claridge’s or The Savoy. There are also opportunities to work overseas during this year. Most students work in Front Office or Food & Beverage, although others have worked in Concierge, Reservations or Accounting.
During this year you have the opportunity to combine the theoretical knowledge you have learned in the first year with practical application in the hotel. Entry to this year is not automatic as first you have to have passed all of your first year assignments and have a satisfactory attendance record and then have your application accepted by a hotel. All hotels require good spoken English and an acceptable appearance. You will be counseled by LHS about the best hotel and position for you, as well as being coached on interview technique.
Once you have started your work placement we will visit you to check on your progress with your manager. We want to ensure you have a positive experience and we work closely with the employing hotel to make sure things go smoothly.
This year placement also involves writing a major assignment requiring your research into to some aspect of the hotels business operations and into your personal strengths and the best career directions before you will be awarded the HND.
On completion of the Higher National Diploma students have two options, finish your studies or take a one year top-up course for your BA Degree in Hospitality Management.
